In
early
2003 the A700 very light twinjet was said by the chairman of its
manufacturer,
Adam Industries, to be on schedule to fly in the second half of 2003
with
certification in 2004. However, by mid 2004 certification was envisaged
to be in 2005 although it would still be the first in its class to be
in
service. It is based on the companies A500 piston twin, albeit 28
inches longer. Powered by two Williams FJ33-1 turbojets, cruise
speed
is advertised at 340kt, range 1400nm and a ceiling of 41,000ft.
The
aircraft seats six to eight persons and costs around two million
dollars.
A proof of concept aircraft first flew on July 27 2003 and a test
aircraft
flew in late 2005. 276 orders were claimed as of late 2006 when
three test aircraft were flying. However, in February 2008 the
company declared bancruptcy and was subsequently purchased by AAI
Acquisitions, a company funded by Russian interests. The aim is to
resume development towards certification..

The
FJ-100 Aerostar Jet is a planned adaptation of the Aerostar twin prop aircraft.
Engine selection has not yet been made but range is claimed to be 1500nm
with 3 occupants or 1000nm with 6 occupants and a maximum cruise speed
of 462mph. In mid 2003 certification of the aircraft was delayed
to 2006 due to financial shortfalls. Other changes to the original Aerostar
include a 1.1m fuselage stretch, a stronger wing and cruciform tail.. |

The ProJet
was a six seat twin jet designed to fly at speeds up to 365 knots at altitudes
up to 41,000 feet and a range of 1,200 nautical miles. Cost was invisaged
as being about 2 million dollars. A strategic alliance was in place
with Israeli Aircraft Industries, who would have been responsible for design,
engineering, development, production and certification of the aircraft.
Avocet would have provided sales, training, delivery and support.
It was envisaged to be powered by two 1300lb thrust engines. However,
in April 2006 the programme was terminated as no large partner had been
found. |

Leopard Jet

The
Chichester-Miles Consultants (CMC) Leopard Jet has been in design and flight
testing in the UK for over fifteen years. The aircraft first
flew in 1988 using Noel Penney turbojets, but is now powered by Williams
FJX-1 engines, which will eventually be replaced by the more powerful FJX-2
version, an event envisioned for the year 2000. Plans are underway
for a larger 6 seat version, named the Leopard 6, but funding is yet to
be found. |

In
2003 the intellectual property of bankrupt, single engined jet developer
Visionaire, was bought for 441,000 dollars and plans began to develop a
twin jet version of the aircraft. Manufacture of a prototype has
begun in Brazil. Seating up to ten passengers, the aircraft will
be powered by two Williams FJ44-1AP engines giving a speed of 427kt and
range of 1300nm. Certification was proposed in 2007. |

The
Elite Jet is a jet powered, 5-7 seat version of the EpicLT cabin
class kitplane,
which is being developed by Ohio based EpicAir in association with
Tblisi
Aircraft Manufacturing of Georgia. Powered by two Williams
FJ33-4A
engines it is intended to offer the composite aircraft as a
kitplane.
With a range of 1,400nm and a speed of 420kts the aircraft is envisaged
to cost 2 million dollars and carry up to 8 passengers. It first
flew on 7th June 2007 from its Bend, Oregon base. |

German
aircraft manufacturer, Grob Aerospace revealed its surprise entry
into the utility light jet market at the Paris Air Show in 2005.
The aircraft first flew a month later on 20th July 2005! It has
an
8 seat interior, is all composite and has a cargo door and short field
capability. Range is 1800nm with 6 passengers. Powered by
Williams
FJ44-3A engines giving a maximum speed of 407kts, certification was
planned
for early 2007 with deliveries starting shortly afterwards at a cost of
around 7 million dollars. Marketing expertise is supplied by
Execujet. However, the second prototype crashed during a
demonstration flight in November 2006, the cause put down to elevator flutter, delaying certification into mid
2008. |

The
Honda Jet was an initially experimental aircraft which first flew on
3rd December
2003. It is powered by Honda's own HF118 turbofan engines which
give
1,670lb of thrust each giving a range of 1,100nm and a capacity of
eight
persons. The fuselage is made of composite materials while the
wings
and eppanage are aluminium. The unique engine position leaves
space
for greater cabin capacity. It was later decided to take the
aircraft into production and this is expected to start in 2009 in
Greensboro, North Carolina. Production rates are said to be over 70 a year with over 100 orders claimed in mid 2007. |

The Leader
is a five seat twinjet kit aircraft costing 1.25 million dollars.
Initial flights were carried out using the Maverick modified General Electric
T58 turboshaft but in March 2003 it was announced that these were to be
replaced by two Williams FJ33 1100lb thrust small turbofans which give
a maximum cruise of 412kts, a ceiling of 31000ft with a range of 1500nm.
First Williams powered aircraft is scheduled to fly in June 2003.
The kits take about nine months to complete and several 'build assist'
centres have been set up to aid completion. Maverick is based in Melbourne,
Florida.
Maverick
are also aiming to be the first to market a factory completed personal
jet, ahead of Eclipse and Safire.

The Safire
Aircraft company of Opa Locka, Florida planned to fly the first Safire
6 seat Personal Jet in early 2004 with certification aimed for December
2005. Engine will be the 1100lb thrust Williiams FJ-33 giving a range
of 1150nm, a ceiling of 41000ft and a speed of 380kts. Price is $1.4
million and deposits for 720 aircraft were claimed in mid 2003.
.
This
is another project that has seen significant changes in design since its
inception. It was originally planned as the S-26 composite aircraft with
Agilis TF1000 engines, a design that was significantly changed in early
2003 to an all alumunium aircraft with the other details as above.
However,
in mid 2004 funding difficulties caused suspension of development pending
re-finance. Eclipse aviation quickly took advantage of the situation
by offering Safire customers special terms if they switched allegiances! |

Spectrum
Aeronautical announced the Spectrum jet at the 2005 NBAA show. It
seats up to nine people and is powered by two Williams FJ33-4A engines
giving a cruise speed of 415kts and a 2000nm range. The cabin
size
is similar to the Citation CJ2 but due to the use of composites the
weight
is significantly less giving fuel costs of almost half the Cessna
offering.
Cost will be 3.65 million dollars. First flight of the proof of
concept
aircraft was on 7th January 2006 although unfortunately the aircraft
crashed that July during take off, an event that was blamed on an error
during servicing. Certification is now planned for 2009. |
