Probably the epitome
of the executive jet, the Gulfstream has been built in four main models
but with several sub variants. Gulfstream 4 and 5 aircraft are built
concurrently in Savannah, Georgia. Fitting out is mostly performed
at Gulfstream owned facilities at Brunswick, Georgia, Long Beach, California
and Dallas-Love Field, Texas.

259 of all Gulfstream 2 models were built and many were subsequently converted as follows, with a small number of late models being built as Gulfstream 3's. Construction numbers are in the 1-258 sequence, with c/n 87 redesigned c/n 775 at the original customers request. They are powered by Rolls Royce Spey 511-8 turbofans and can accommodate up to nineteen passengers. The aircraft first flew on 2nd October 1966. |

Around 20 Gulfstream 2's were built with tip tanks for extra range and designated as the G2TT. Most of these were later converted to G2B's. |

Around 40 Gulfstream 2 aircraft were converted to this model by Gulfstream by adding the wings and nose of the Gulfstream 3 to the Gulfstream 2 frame. This version first flew on 17th March 1981 and can be differentiated from the Gulfstream 3 by the two squarer side cockpit windows. |

The
most recent adaptation for the Gulfstream 2 sees winglets being added once
again, which can be differentiated from those on the G2B by a smooth curve
at the root rather than the sharp angle (see photo's below). This conversion
is performed by Aviation Partners and was originally unofficially known
as the Gulfstream 2W.

A single, early model Gulfstream 2 was operated by the US Coast Guard and designated as the VC11A, although there were few differences to the standard Gulfstream 2. This aircraft has now been superseded in Coast Guard service by a surplus USAF C20B. |

199 of all Gulfstream 3 models were built, replacing the Gulfstream 2 on the production line. Winglets were standard on this model. The easiest way to differentiate between the Gulfstream 3 and the 2B is by the three re-shaped cockpit windows, as opposed to the four squarer ones on the Gulf 2. Construction numbers ranged from 300 - 498, plus unique number 875. Two aircraft built for the Indian Air Force have cargo doors and only three windows each side. The Gulfstream 3 is powered by Rolls Royce Spey mk 511-8 turbofans and can carry up to nineteen passengers. It first flew on 2nd December 1979 and is 24 inches longer than the G2. Range is around 5,129 miles, depending on the number of passengers. |

Quiet
Technology Aerospace received certification in early
2003 for their Stage 3 hush kit for Gulfstream 2 and 3 retrofit.
It includes a 12 lobe exhaust mixer, acoustically treated carbon fibre
composite bullets in the inlet and exhaust and a translating ejector nozzle
designed to allow retention of the original Gulfstream target type thrust
reverser. Installing the hush kit does not require any change to
the engine pylon and can be installed in around ten days at a cost of 1.65
million dollars, with a weight addition of 450lb per side. Take off
and climb performance is unaffected, but a cruise penalty of five per cent
is quoted.
External
differences include a lengthening of the engine pod by almost a quarter.

Really
Quiet LLC of Mojave received their certification in early
2002. This system consists of a translating ejector which is in the
aft position during take off and landing which forces gas through nozzles
into an ejector shroud that reduces velocity and noise. Once out
of this configuration the kit slides forward to become part of the main
pod. Additional weight is about 300lb and a maximum of 4 percent
performance penalty is quoted. Cost is 1.95 million and installation
requires four to six weeks.
. Once again, the visual length of the pod is increased. |
